Forty Years of Forest Succession in Central New England

چکیده

The first 40 yr of forest succession on permanent plots at the Harvard Forest in central New England followed the initial floristic composition model of forest succession. After the 1938 hurricane removed the previous white pine (Pinus strobus) canopy, species regenerated within 4-6 yr by sprouts, buried seed, and wind-blown seed, with no method of regeneration uniformly contributing more to species success than another. Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) was the only species successfully regenerating after 1948. Pin cherry (Prunus pennsylvanica) was the early dominant in size and numbers (5000 stems/ha). At year 10, pin cherry, red maple (Acer rubrum), white ash (Fraxinus americana), and red oak (Quercus rubra) were dominant. Species diversity had reached a maximum. By year 40, red oak and paper birch (Betula papyrifera) showed strong canopy dominance, making up only 7.5 and 4.9W, respectively, of total density but 37.5 and 12.5%, respectively, of the sizedominant stems. Red maple and white pine were also codominant in 1978. Some evidence for an intermediate stage dominated by red maple and gray birch (B. populifolia) was found. On one previously hardwood plot, the same species were present, and similar trends in species composition and dominance were followed, but there was more surviving hemlock advance regeneration and a lower density of some shade-intolerant early dominant species. The canopy structure was loosely multilayered, and at any given point in succession, species tended to be found in characteristic layers, although these relative positions could change with time.

An Appraisal of the Classic Forest Succession Paradigm with the Shade Tolerance Index

In this paper we revisit the classic theory of forest succession that relates shade tolerance and species replacement and assess its validity to understand patch-mosaic patterns of forested ecosystems of the USA. We introduce a macroscopic parameter called the "shade tolerance index" and compare it to the classic continuum index in southern Wisconsin forests. We exemplify shade tolerance driven...

Simulating long-term vegetation dynamics using a forest landscape model: the post-Taupo succession on Mt Hauhungatahi, North Island, New Zealand

Forest dynamics in New Zealand are shaped by catastrophic, landscape-level disturbances (e.g. volcanic eruptions, windstorms and fires). The long return-intervals of these disturbances, combined with the longevity of many of New Zealand’s tree species, restrict empirical investigations of forest dynamics. In combination with empirical data (e.g. palaeoecological reconstructions), simulation mod...

Importance of succession, harvest, and climate change in determining future composition in U.S. Central Hardwood Forests

Most temperate forests in U.S. are recovering from heavy exploitation and are in intermediate successional stages where partial tree harvest is the primary disturbance. Changes in regional forest composition in response to climate change are often predicted for plant functional types using biophysical process models. These models usually simplify the simulation of succession and harvest and may...

Spatiotemporal dynamics of simulated wildfire, forest management, and forest succession in central Oregon, USA

We use the simulation model Envision to analyze long-term wildfire dynamics and the effects of different fuel management scenarios in central Oregon, USA. We simulated a 50-year future where fuel management activities were increased by doubling and tripling the current area treated while retaining existing treatment strategies in terms of spatial distribution and treatment type. We modeled fore...

Succession of soil nematodes in pine forests on coal-mining sands near Cottbus, Germany

The succession of soil nematodes from initial planting with Pinus sylvestris seedling to about 30-year-old pine plantations on coal mining sands in the Lusatian lignite-mining district near Cottbus (Germany) was studied and compared with the nematode fauna of a 40-year-old semi-natural pine forest on naturally formed sandy soil. The initial stage was primarily characterised by a very low abunda...
